Innovative design hotel made of cement and wood
One@Tokyo was designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma. Its bold design combines industrial materials, such as cement, and with natural materials like wood in both its exterior and interior spaces. Its design pays homage to the district of Oshiage, which is known for its light manufacturing industry. Kuma explains it as follows: “To recall the rather rough but still approachable quality of the area, we opted to use extruded cement panels with wooden screens for the façade, harking back to the small factories that used to stand next to each other. For the interior, a combination of an exposed ceiling and structural plywood creates an atmosphere rooted in its surroundings, a quality not found in many contemporary hotels. The ground floor of the hotel includes a restaurant, bar, and a reception area for guests, and harmony among these spaces is achieved through the use of wood. By opening the wooden screen at the ground floor, the hotel lobby and passage in front of the building transform into a single space, evoking a feeling of co-existence with the local community.” The guest rooms are designed as minimalist, functional studios; the Atelier Suite boasts features taken from the artist’s atelier; and the Library Suite is modeled after a book lover’s private study. A direct view of the Tokyo Sky Tree® can be enjoyed from its rooftop lounge surrounded by lush greenery.
