SHISEIDO GALLERY

Modern art source supports up-coming artists

Opened in 1919 by Shinzo Fukuhara, the Japanese cosmetic giant’s first president, who was also a keen photographer, the Shiseido Gallery is the oldest existing gallery in the country. Throughout its long history, the gallery has honored a policy of discovering

and creating new value, providing exhibition spaces for young artists who later proved pivotal to the Japanese art scene. Since the1990s, the gallery’s focus has shifted to contemporary art and artists with an avant-garde edge.

In 2007, it launched the “shiseido art egg” annual competitions for young artists, in which three winners are granted solo shows at the gallery. A reliable source of fresh and exciting talent, the gallery is located in the basement of the Ricardo Bofill-designed Tokyo Ginza Shiseido Building in the Ginza.
