Opened in 2007, The National Art Center, Tokyo, boasts a 14,000 square-meter exhibition space, making it one of the largest art centers in Japan. Since it does not have a private collection, this center is dedicated to special exhibitions and traveling expositions from abroad, as well as serving as the base for the Japan Media Arts Festival held by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
The building itself is one of Kisho Kurokawa’s (1934-2007) final works. Inside the impressive building, light filters beautifully through a waved glass curtain, making the space as enjoyable as the art it contains. The museum shop is also a good source of gifts and souvenirs.
